On Saturday afternoon Mike (Colombia), Raul (Ecuador), David
(Brazil) and I (USA) headed out from the airport in Cali for the little
agricultural town of Roldanillo, base station for the 2011 Colombian National
Hang Gliding Championships. Once Mike and I had made our way through the

With a mostly blue sky it looks like the day has a lot more promise than
yesterday. We leave for launch around 8:30 as the driver seemed to have been
lost on the way to the hotel. Cloud base is below launch when we get there, be
rising quickly. We don't get socked in like on the previous...

We wake up to a cloudy day with thick mid level scud, low level
cu's and just a few patches of blue with the sun hitting the ground. It looks
very unpromising. I have a hard time believing that we will fly today.
We head up the hill at 8 AM, they start early around here. We are the first
pilots on launch. The launch is just above the ton on...

Heres a video clip of the best triangle conditions Ive ever
flown in down in Florida. 6K+ bases, 700+fpm climbs and winds less than 5 MPH.
Flew the flight with Greg Dinauer. We never got low or in trouble and completed
the 55+ mile task in 2:24, landing...

I haven't heard any word about how it went or whether the USHPA is
seriously going to consider moving the headquarters out of Colorado Springs now
that they've hired internally (Martin Palmaz) as the Executive Director. See
here.
Martin told me last fall that he would be more than willing to move, say to Salt
Lake City.
Send me updates. Send...

I head for Cali, Colombia and the 2011 Colombian Nationals on Friday. I'll be
reporting on this under reported area and competition. Colombian pilots come to
fly in the US especially in Florida and Arizona so we are familiar with the
pilots that we will be competing with next week. The original point of the Oz Report was to expand the...

I purchased and tested some of
these
last week. The nitrite coating was thin and the gloves didn't feel like gloves.
I purchase another brand first at Hone Depot for $1.98/pair, but they were a one
size fits all (so didn't fit as well as the ones linked to above) and the nitrite
was thicker.I wear extra large gloves normally (fingerless bike...

I asked myself for a new paradigm in pro aerotow release. Why not
using a barrel release on the tow line rather than on the pilot ?
No more equipment required for the pilot except its own weaklink. You can
release without any tension by pushing. No more drag for the racers.
Maybe we have to...

the rain and the front passing through in the early morning). Looks good for the

We are now in our 15th volume of the Oz Report. I don't know if that much
history means that much, maybe it's just the same thing again and again. It also
seems that the present and especially the future are so much more important. We
can act in the present and plan to act in the future but the past is lost to us.
And it seems so...

After such a rainy and snowy winter, everybody seems to be
strongly waiting for springtime. Spring means Trofeo Montegrappa 2011 the
traditional Easter flying event, that this year will boast its 10th edition. The
listed FAI 2 competition for paragliding and FAI 1-5 for hang gliding will take
place from 21st...

The article with pictures

Last Saturday we had about 17 pilots brought to the Florida Ridge
by the day's promising forecast. There was a light SE wind, and the forecast
predicted 500fpm thermals and 6000 feet cloudbase in the afternoon.

It was a good weekend here at Quest Air. The winds were out of the
south on both days. On Saturday lots of thick low clouds with a drop or two of
rain so I waited until things cleared up a bit around 2 PM and took off with a
blue hole over us and lots of shading around us.I pinned off at 1,300' AGL and worked the light lift drifting to the...
