Suzy Moyes, daughter of Bill and Molly, has passed away today from a stroke. So many pilots have slept and eat in her house, invited in with a warm heart! I was, we were many in love with her. Of course, nothing happened, she was more like our big sister, full of joy.

Register now - Most airtime, longest tasks, best pilots, easy retrieves. Big Spring!
Thank you for planning, now is the time to pay before July 9th to avoid late registration charges ($100 more). The weather is shaping up to be the best conditions ever for high cloudbase and epic triangle tasks. Great pilots, flying and...

On the second to last day of the Worlds we went to the launch at Aspres for a 113 kilometer task that would take us across the valleys before heading for Ribiers. On this day Jonny Durand completed the task faster than any one else.
Our (the US team's) plan was to get to Aiguille a ridge to the southwest of launch in order to be able to run...

I wrote on the paragliding forum (edited):
The DHV has a huge conflict of interest. It was not too long ago that the paraglider manufacturer's essentially cut the DHV out of 200,000 Euros in annual income by taking over testing and certification within their own association.
Unlike in the US, the DHV does both testing and is supposed to...

There is a hang glider manufacturer's association that provides testing and certification. It has a superior methodology. It is run by the manufacturers. Why don't the existing manufacturers use it to do all their certification and bypass Germany and the DHV, which apparently only has 350 hang glider pilots anyway?
Well, the...

"I loved this bird's-eye look into the curious subculture of hang gliding but Joe Quirk's book is about so much more. Tumbling into his wonderfully told story of life, death, friendship and love is a thrill not to be missed."

Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
While the US didn't have much of a chance for third place, we (they) had a good
chance for fourth, and a zig here instead of a zag there would have done it. We
were eighteen points out of fourth place out of over 13,000 points.
I was no help at all. If either I, Jeff Shapiro, or Zippy had been two to four
minutes...

All members of the US team except me went flying from Plaine Joux, see here, for a very nice two hour flight with soft lift and the ability to get up on the rocks next to the clouds. I felt that I needed to work on short packing my gliders as I'm leaving a day earlier than the rest of them.
We are all staying at the Le Vert...

First, what was up with Manfred? Did he just make a mistake? Did he risk it all by not playing it safe?
First, Alex Ploner won the World Championship fair and square by being in a position to move ahead of Manfred if Manfred made any mistakes. He was 200 points behind Manfred in second place. And after all, winning in a hang gliding contest...

One of the many pleasant surprises at the Worlds was Max Bishop, the head of the FAI, coming to the Worlds in Laragne, a not too long distance away from his office in Lausanne, Switzerland. He came for a couple of days and gave the closing speech at the awards ceremony on Saturday morning after Alex Ploner was awarded first place and the Italian...
