When it comes to geography, West Texas doesn't exactly have the greatest reputation.
From Mack Davis' song about how happiness is Lubbock in his rearview mirror to Larry McMurtry's haunting novel The Last Picture Show, the flat, treeless, endless landscape inspires feelings of... mehr

If the USHPA doesn't really care about fielding teams for the Worlds competition, why do they keep sending approximately $10,000 every year to the NAA/FAI? The only benefit that they get is the ability to send a few "elitists" to the World Championships. And since they (or maybe it is just the... mehr

Meet directors at the beck and call of the USHPA Competition Committee
Chairman
A meet director must hold a USHPA Meet Director Appointment (for Class B and C events).
Apprentice under a USHPA appointed meet director at B and C level meets. (NOTE: This requirements may be waived....)
Looks like even though I have been the meet director for the... mehr

Pilots must sign a statement that his/her glider is in certified form or is considered safe to fly (by the pilot).
What exactly does this do for the competition other than add another complication? This seems to apply to all "events."
Buried by irrelevant paper work. Yet another unfunded mandate. Is this the work of the USHPA lawyer? mehr

This is where it gets obscure. Sorry if this gets a bit thick here (an example follows below).
The Workgroup plans a major change in how the NTSS ranking system works and how meets ("events") acquire the points that they are worth to the pilots that are contemplating attending them. It is difficult to follow, and I've plowed... mehr

Twenty seven hang glider pilots showed up 2008 Big Spring Internationals. Therefore for attendance under the proposed system it was worth 405 (15 points time 27 pilots) points. A number of quality pilots showed up. I calculate that they were worth an additional 316 NTSS points (I'd love to have that checked). So the total value of the meet (not... mehr

At the BOD meeting the competition work group gave us a very professional presentation but it did not cover the details of this proposal. The BOD was then asked to vote if the work group should proceed to the next step, which was, as you point out, to do what should have been done first- query the comp... mehr

The Forbes Flatlands has been the season's premium competition for 20 years and will attract the World's top competitors. What's different this year?
The top pilots all tow well. The thermals are guaranteed and the whole field is gone from the airport in one hour. This leaves the tug pilots with nothing... mehr

Well, it gets worse. Also the Working Draft points to the wrong appendix, and the right appendix is empty, so this is somewhat unclear.
There is currently only a requirement that a meet organizer submit an application for the Nationals by the Fall... mehr

The east facing take off in this month's movie, http://www.vimeo.com/2145724 is a hang glider friendly one, because one does not have to laboriously carry the glider uphill. However, one may have to laboriously return on foot to the parking near the take off, to then drive down to fetch the glider ;-)... mehr

Now this is really silly, but also very revealing. The USHPA Competition Workgroup proposes to set up a three tiered system of "events." Class A events are local or regional events. Class B are national in scope. Class C are National... mehr
