31.03.2009, The Oz Report
The Oz Report was heavily involved in stopping (for now) some ill considered changes in the USHPA competition system. Part of that involvement consisted of providing months ago detailed and well considered alternatives to the Competition Workgroup's proposals. These proposals will again be on the agenda for the Fall USHPA BOD meeting in Austin,... mehr

Previously, I have written extensively about the Competition Workgroup proposals both critiquing them and providing detailed alternatives (for example here: http://ozreport.com/12.241#0). Now the Executive Committee has withdrawn the changes in the competition system that they passed in their EC meeting and the BOD agreed to that withdrawal,... mehr

Because they can get exposure to the very small customer base of hang glider pilots through the relatively cheap means of the Oz Report. I can even support a very small niche business of bridles, releases, straps, and flags because of Oz Report exposure. Something that would never have happened before this world wide communication means.... mehr

Our first day of meetings started in a full-scale blizzard. Many of the directors are having a very tough time getting here. Several have been forced to cancel. My notes below are from the handful of committee meetings I attended. Please note, these are my own personal notes and are not vetted by committee... mehr

The USHPA Board of Directors voted in general session Saturday afternoon to overturn the executive committee's decision to change the competition ranking system. It has now returned to the previous system, that found in the USHPA Competition Rulebook. I'll report when I know what is next up.
The Regional Directors received a petition from 235... mehr

The Competition Committee members (Lisa Tate, Mike Haley, and Riss Estes) blocked the petition proposals and have blocked any attempt at a compromise (using Greg Babush's proposals) and left it so their "original" proposal for counting warm bodies in meets stays. It was already decided that way by the EC a few months ago so blocking a... mehr

As has been the case over the last two weeks the winds were strong out of the south southwest. The low clouds were whipping by and there was lots of vertical development all around with very dark bottomed clouds nearby.
When the clouds would come over the winds would drop down so it looked like there might be times where it was safe and easy to... mehr

One proposal that is up for discussion:
http://blog.gregbabush.com/2008/08/pg-competition-rulebook-modification.html
Subject: Modifying the Computation of points brought by pilots to a Paragliding Meet.
Problem: 1. The current system is dependent on the top 10 pilots attending a meet otherwise full validity cannot be attained. 2. The system uses... mehr

I have seen some pictures of pilots wearing nose protection and since I've had my share of burndt noses over the years I wanted to get one. I find it pretty amazing that in this day and age, people have a fear of hang gliding on the level of base jumping, skydiving, Russian roulette, spiders, large snakes, and man-eating sharks.
Operating my tandem hang gliding business over water here on the coast of southwest Florida, there are some... mehr

After almost ten days of light winds and great soaring conditions we've had almost two weeks of winds and good soaring conditions. The winds have made it difficult to want to launch as the first few hundred feet are pretty rough (sometimes). We had a great time going north on Wednesday when the winds calmed down, but they were strong again on... mehr
